Science
Science helps us understand the world around us, so use authentic opportunities to learn more about science. Remember that integrating subjects is the best way to develop deep understandings of new concepts, so use the suggestions below as initial investigations to lead into reading, exploring, and sharing new concepts.
- When a storm (thunder storm, hurricane, tornado) is reported nearby, learn more about what causes them and what to do to stay safe.
- When it is cold outside, what should you wear and why? Why do some clothes help you stay warm and others don't?
- What animals and insects live in your yard or use some of its resources? Why do they live there?
- Visit the zoo to see a variety of habitats that you don't normally see. Find out what attributes make those animals live well in those habitats.
- Why do some ingredients mix well when you are cooking? Why do others not mix well?
- When your child gets a cut or bruise, learn how the skin works, how blood works, why scabs are formed, and other ideas.
- Read books related to topics of study. Seymour Simon has written a lot of good books on scientific topics. Be careful when you choose science books. Many books can be difficult to read because of the vocabulary. However, when you read books as part of a project or in-depth study, your child will be able to understand more than when reading the books on their own.
